When Samantha Renke, 29, is out in a club, she gets guys coming up to her and making comments like: “While you’re down there love…” It’s not just because she’s four foot, but mainly because she’s in a wheelchair.
Renke has what’s commonly known as brittle bone syndrome, meaning her bones break easily and she has to use a wheelchair permanently.
“For me I was about 13 or 14 when I got invited for a sleepover, which was the first time someone had invited me to their house.” According to disability charity Scope, which launched the study as part of its #End The Awkward campaign, only five per cent of people have ever been on a date with, or asked out, a disabled person.
Even though there are at least 9.4 million disabled people in England, accounting for 18 per cent of the population.
“They make assumptions that I can’t have sex or I’m not capable of being in a relationship,” she says.
